West Wimmera Shire Council will look to recognised outstanding members of the community through its annual Senior Citizen of the Year award.

Nominations for the award are now open and anyone over the age of 60 can be nominated.

The Senior Citizen of the Year award recognises an unsung hero in West Wimmera Shire.

Winners are often someone who continues to be active in the community and encourages others to do the same.

They have a positive attitude towards aging and community wellbeing.

Mayor Tim Meyer said there were many people in the region who made an outstanding contribution to their community.

“Many of us know someone who we think should receive some thanks for their strong contribution, positive attitude and being a great role model,” he said.

“If they are also aged over 60, this is an excellent opportunity to nominate them for Senior Citizen of the Year.

“We encourage people to start thinking about who they can nominate for this award.

There are many quiet achievers within our local communities who deserve recognition.”

Nomination forms are available online here. Forms can also be collected from the customer service centres at Edenhope and Kaniva.

Nominations will close at 5pm on Friday 30 August 2024, and the winner will be selected by an independent panel in September 2024.

The winner will be announced at West Wimmera Shire Council’s Seniors Concert in Edenhope on October 24.

This year’s concert will feature Wendy Stapleton performing her “Hits of the 60s” show.

Council is expanding its seniors celebrations this year, providing funding for additional festival activities throughout October.

The men's sheds in the shire will be hosting various events and talks during the month, to raise their profile and encourage new members.

In addition to the concert, a mini expo will be held on the morning of October 24 from 10.30am to 12.15pm.

The expo will showcase health services in West Wimmera and feature displays from local men’s sheds.

The day will also include informative talks on topics such as cyber safety, Victoria Police’s key safe program, and emergency management.
