Background Information

West Wimmera Shire Council is embarking on a significant upgrade of the football changerooms at the Edenhope Recreation Reserve, a $1.6 million project that reflects the community's commitment to improving local sports facilities. The project is backed by a $1 million grant from the State Government, supplemented by $240,000 from West Wimmera Shire and $360,000 from the Edenhope-Apsley Football Netball Club.

The current changerooms at Edenhope Recreation Reserve are among the oldest in the shire and do not meet the modern standards set by the AFL. Originally part of the Agricultural Society’s structures, the building's layout is awkwardly positioned in relation to the main oval, leading to inadequate amenities and limited space for both players and umpires. Additionally, the changerooms lack accessibility features, such as suitable ramps and accessible bathrooms, making them difficult to use for individuals with disabilities. The existing design also fails to provide private changing and showering spaces, compromising the privacy and comfort of all users.

To address these significant shortcomings, the Edenhope Recreation Reserve Changerooms Redevelopment was identified as a priority project in West Wimmera Shire Council's draft sport and recreation strategy. With the Edenhope-Apsley Football Netball Club transitioning to fortnightly games at the reserve in 2024, the need for upgraded, compliant changerooms has become even more critical.

Proposed Scope

The redevelopment will involve the construction of a new, state-of-the-art facility between the netball courts and the football oval. The new building will feature two AFL-standard changerooms, each equipped with toilets and showers, as well as two umpire changerooms with their own toilet and shower facilities. A first aid room, accessible from the outside of the building, will provide essential medical support for all users of the reserve. Additionally, the project includes the installation of public toilets, including a unisex toilet, female and male ambulant toilets, and an all-accessible toilet with baby change facilities.

The new facility is designed according to AFL Victoria standards, ensuring it meets the needs of modern athletes and officials. It also prioritises inclusivity, with features like accessible ramps and toilets, as well as private changing areas, making the changerooms welcoming to all, regardless of age, gender, or physical ability.

The inclusion of family-friendly features, such as baby change facilities and additional public toilets, will make the Edenhope Recreation Reserve a more welcoming environment for families, encouraging greater participation in local sports and recreational activities. By fostering a more inclusive and community-focused atmosphere, the redevelopment will contribute to the overall health and well-being of the Edenhope community, enhancing the quality of life for present and future generations.
