Australian Citizenship Ceremonies

Australia day 2

Australian citizenship is an important common bond for all Australians and lies at the heart of a unified, cohesive and inclusive Australia.

How do I apply to become an Australian citizen?

You must apply through the Department of Home Affairs. The department assesses all applications and forwards the names of successful applicants to the West Wimmera Shire Council.

Citizenship Ceremonies

West Wimmera Shire Council hosts citizenship ceremonies throughout the year on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs. The Mayor confers citizenship on successful applicants during the ceremony, which is held in accordance with the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code.

The citizenship ceremony is the final legal step in becoming an Australian citizen. Council will contact approved applicants to confirm arrangements for their ceremony. Information about what to expect during a ceremony is available on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Where can I find more information about citizenship?

You can call the Department of Home Affairs on 131 881 or visit their citizenship website.
