Councillor Tim Meyer has been re-elected mayor of West Wimmera Shire Council.
This will be Cr Meyer’s third term in the role.
He was re-elected at Council’s annual statutory meeting in Kaniva on Tuesday.
Cr Meyer said it was an honour and a privilege to be elected as mayor.
“I thank my fellow councillors for this opportunity. In the past few years, we’ve put in a lot of work, and I know what we have ahead of us,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to the year ahead and I really feel we can hit the ground running and get things done.”
Cr Meyer was elected to Council in 2020. He lives in Kaniva and has agricultural interests in the area.
Cr Meyer said he was passionate about improving community assets.
“We must also continue to advocate for grants from the state and federal governments,” he said.
“We need to continue to push for more funding and support for our roads.”
Cr Jodie Pretlove was elected deputy mayor. She thanked her fellow councillors for supporting her and said she was looking forward to the opportunity.
Cr Pretlove was first elected to Council in 2016 and served six previous terms as either mayor or deputy mayor.
West Wimmera Shire Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout congratulated Cr Meyer and Cr Pretlove on their appointments.
Councillors also acknowledged the work of former councillor Bruce Meyer. Mr Meyer was first elected to the Shire of Kaniva in 1993 and was in inaugural mayor of West Wimmera Shire Council in 1997.
“To have 29 years of service is an incredible achievement and the amount of work he has done for this shire will never be matched,” Cr Tim Meyer said.
“I know firsthand the sacrifices he made for the community – he poured so much into his role, and he achieved so many things that people wouldn’t even realise.”
Cr Pretlove said Mr Meyer was dedicated to his position.
“He was ready for the robust discussions, and he always put his best foot forwards,” she said.
“You couldn’t help but learn a bit from Bruce. I admire his dedication over the past 29 years, and he will be missed around the Council table.”
