Young leaders honoured with Student Citizenship Awards
Published on 18 December 2024
West Wimmera Shire Council has celebrated the achievements of three exceptional young leaders, presenting its annual Student Citizenship Awards this week.
The awards recognise secondary students who demonstrate leadership, commitment to their studies, and meaningful contributions to their school and wider community.
Each secondary college in the shire selects its own award recipient using criteria set by Council.
Students are chosen for their willingness to accept responsibility, active participation in college activities, ability to set a mature example, and strong interactions with staff, peers, and younger students.
The winning students are also willing to assist in tasks that benefit the community, are involved in community activities, and set positive examples regarding sound and responsible attitudes to study.
This year, the award winners were Lucinda Smith for Goroke College, Bonnie Gordon for Kaniva College, and Mollie Reid for Edenhope College.
The awards were presented by West Wimmera Shire Councillors at each school’s presentation night this week.
At Goroke College, Cr Tom Houlihan presented the award to Lucinda Smith, praising her outstanding representation of the college at high-level events and her dedication to academic success.
Bonnie Gordon received her award at Kaniva College from Mayor Tim Meyer, who commended her for consistently striving to achieve her best in both school and community endeavours.
At Edenhope College, Cr Jodie Prelove recognised Mollie Reid for her exceptional dedication to her studies and her determination to embrace challenging opportunities.
Each recipient received a framed certificate and $300 to assist with future education expenses.
Mayor Tim Meyer said all the recipients were extremely deserving.
“Council believes it is important to acknowledge and encourage students who strive for excellence,” Cr Meyer said.
“It’s inspiring to see so many young people striving to make a difference in our communities.”
Eligible recipients are students undertaking the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) in 2024.
Council extends its congratulations to Lucinda, Bonnie, and Mollie for their remarkable achievements and contributions.
