West Wimmera Shire Council has secured funding to develop a dedicated off-leash dog park at the Kaniva Wetlands and Fauna Park.

Council has received $90,000 through the State Government’s New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program.

The project will see the construction of an off-leash dog exercise area for visitors, tourists and locals, which will feature secure fencing, a holding yard, a water fountain, accessible footpaths, and seating.

The park will be constructed on the current lawn area at the Kaniva fauna park.

To offset this loss, a new green space will be developed close to the barbecue and playground area.

The landscaping works will include relocating shrubs, installing a sprinkler system and laying new turf.

West Wimmera Shire Council Chief Executive Officer David welcomed the funding, highlighting the benefits it would bring to dog owners and the wider community.

“This will be a secure and purpose-built space for dogs to exercise, socialise, and train off-leash in a safe environment,” he said.

“These upgrades will not only provide a welcoming environment for dog owners but also expand the picnic and recreation space, improving the park’s appeal for families, visitors, and tourists.”

Mr Bezuidenhout said Kaniva was a high-traffic stop for tourists but currently lacked a dedicated dog park.

“The fauna park already serves as a central hub with a playground, walking track, public toilets, and an outdoor gym,” he said.

“Adding a dog park will complement these amenities and encourage more people to stop in the town.”

The Kaniva project is one of 26 new and upgraded dog parks receiving funding as part of the State Government’s New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program.

Construction of the Kaniva dog park is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

This project is supported by the Victorian Government through the New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program.
