Celebrate Australia Day in West Wimmera Shire

West Wimmera Shire will celebrate Australia Day 2025 with a series of community events across the region.

Mayor Tim Meyer encouraged residents to head along to the community events.

"Australia Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of our community and come together to acknowledge the people who make West Wimmera such a wonderful place to live,” he said.

“I invite everyone to join the events and share in the spirit of the day."

Each event will feature an address by an Australia Day Ambassador.

These distinguished individuals bring inspiring stories and messages to share with the community.

Dergholm’s Australia Day gathering will be at the Dergholm and District Soldiers' Memorial Hall from 11am.

A free barbecue lunch will be provided, complemented by music from Nathan "Skunk" Gill.

The event will also include a speech by an Australia Day Ambassador, to be announced.

Edenhope will host its event at the Edenhope Bowling Club from 8am with a free barbecue breakfast.

Attendees will enjoy performances by Sing Australia and Rob Tuncks, along with an address from Australia Day Ambassador Georgina Campbell.

In Goroke, the celebrations start from 8am at the Goroke Memorial Hall.

A barbecue breakfast will be available, along with entertainment from Poppy Moyle Reid.

The event will also include a speech by an Australia Day Ambassador, to be announced.

Harrow’s Australia Day event will be at the Johnny Mullagh Reserve from 11am.

A shared barbecue lunch will be available, along with entertainment by Jessie Ferguson.

The gathering will feature an address by an Australia Day Ambassador, with details to be confirmed.

Kaniva’s Australia Day celebrations will start from 8am at the Kaniva Memorial Swimming Pool.

A barbecue breakfast will be served for a gold coin donation, with entertainment provided by Robyn Norton. 

The event will include an address by Australia Day Ambassador Christy Wilson.

In Apsley, celebrations will be more relaxed, with a barbecue lunch and games for children from 11am at the Lions Park Playground.

The celebrations will also include the presentation of the prestigious West Wimmera Shire Council Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year, and Community Event of the Year awards.

Cr Meyer said these awards were an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable efforts of individuals, groups, and events that made outstanding contributions to the community.
