West Wimmera Shire Council has awarded funding to four community groups as part of Round 2 of the 2024-25 Community Strengthening Grants Program.

The successful recipients are Telopea Downs Progress Association, Edenhope Adult Riding Club, Kaniva Gun Club (auspiced by LINK Neighbourhood House), and Kaniva Hockey Club.

Telopea Downs Progress Association Inc. will receive $5706 to install reverse cycle heating and cooling in the main area of the Telopea Downs Hall.

The upgrade will allow the group to expand its ability to host community activities year-round by making the hall more comfortable and accessible in all seasons.

Edenhope Adult Riding Club will receive $1,944.25 to purchase a round yard for the Edenhope Equestrian Reserve.

The round yard will provide a safe, controlled space for learner riders, young horses, and general horse training, enhancing the club’s capacity to support equestrian development in the region.

The Kaniva Gun Club will receive $4977.06 to purchase a new clay bird thrower, receiver, and wireless activation remote.

The equipment will help expand the range of sports and recreational opportunities available in Kaniva by supporting the growth and safety of local clay target shooting.

Kaniva Hockey Club will receive $5000 to install new safety fencing around its hockey field.

The fencing will improve safety for players and spectators, prevent unauthorised vehicle access, and reduce disruptions during games by keeping balls within the playing area.

Mayor Tim Meyer said it was great to be able to award the community groups money for these important projects.

“These are all worthy projects that will help these groups complete much-needed upgrades and projects,” he said.

Cr Meyer said all the applications were of good merit that would benefit the community.

The Community Strengthening Grants program is designed to promote and increase participation of residents in community initiatives, to build and strengthen local networks and partnerships, and to support community leadership, learning, and skill development.

This funding has two rounds each year and there are three categories for the funding – community projects, community events, and facilities upgrades.
