West Wimmera Shire Council is applying for funding to kickstart a major upgrade of the Goroke Swimming Centre.

The $50,000 project will develop schematic designs to renew aging infrastructure and improve the centre’s accessibility and functionality.

Council will apply for funding from the State Government’s Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

The Goroke Swimming Centre, a key community asset, is more than 40 years old, and many of its elements, including the amenities, and plant room, are nearing the end of their lifespan.

This funding application will allow Council to complete vital design works, including the development of a new amenities building, a new plant room, ramp entry to the pool, and a wet deck, for future funding opportunities.

Mayor Tim Meyer said the Goroke pool was an integral part of the community, but it was facing significant challenges due to outdated infrastructure.

“By securing funding for detailed designs, we’re taking a crucial step towards renewing and improving the facility for the future,” he said.

Council will apply for $40,000 from the State Government and will contribute $10,000 towards the project.

Cr Meyer said Council was committed to planning for future funding opportunities that would help renew the pool facilities and ensure long-term sustainability.

“Once the detailed designs are complete, Council will be well-positioned to apply for further state funding for the full-scale upgrades,” he said.
