West Wimmera Shire Council has secured funding for three infrastructure projects in Goroke and Kaniva, supporting safer, more accessible and modern sporting facilities.
Council has secured $1.308 million from the State Government’s Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund round two, for three separate projects:
Mayor Tim Meyer said the successful funding applications reflected Council’s strong planning and ongoing commitment to improving recreational spaces across the shire.
“These projects are vital to maintaining safe, accessible, and inclusive facilities that support our clubs, volunteers, and community wellbeing,” he said.
“Council has worked closely with the Goroke and Kaniva communities to scope, plan and prioritise these projects. This funding is a great result for both towns.”
The Kaniva bowls all-abilities infrastructure upgrade is a $825,000 project that will transform the Kaniva Bowling Club into a fully accessible and inclusive space.
The project includes a new synthetic green, energy-efficient LED lighting, new accessible toilet facilities, and all-abilities pathways throughout the site.
The Kaniva Bowling Club will contribute $123,750 towards the project.
The upgrades will support greater participation in lawn bowls and create a more welcoming venue for community members of all abilities.
Activation of this project includes an additional $50,000 to facilitate participation initiatives at the Kaniva Bowls Club.
The Goroke AFL lighting and irrigation project is a $760,000 upgrade that will bring the town’s recreation reserve up to modern standards.
The project includes the installation of AFL-standard lighting, an automated irrigation system, upgraded drainage, and improved fencing.
These upgrades will allow for safer night training and community events, reduce the physical workload on volunteers, and enhance the long-term sustainability of the facility.
The Goroke community will contribute $140,600 towards this project.
The Goroke Swimming Centre facilities design project is a $50,000 initiative to develop schematic designs for a future upgrade of the ageing community pool.
The funding will support the creation of detailed plans for a new amenities building, a new plant room, ramp entry to the pool and a wet deck.
These designs will form the basis for future funding applications, helping to secure the long-term viability of the swimming centre as a vital local asset.
Cr Meyer said the projects were part of a broader strategy to bring sporting facilities across the shire up to modern standards.
“These upgrades will not only improve community access and safety but will also help ensure the long-term sustainability of our facilities and support increased participation in sport and recreation,” he said.
