Background Information 

West Wimmera Shire Council is supporting significant infrastructure upgrades at the Kaniva Bowling Club to enhance accessibility and improve facilities for all participants. This project will deliver a new synthetic bowling green, upgraded lighting, accessible pathways, and improved amenities to create an inclusive space for the entire community.

The current Kaniva Bowling Club features a bowling green that is nearing the end of its lifespan, making replacement essential to ensure the long-term sustainability of the facility. Existing footpaths do not meet modern accessibility standards due to inadequate grade, width, and trip hazards, posing safety risks for participants. Additionally, the club lacks accessible toilet facilities, limiting opportunities for people of all abilities to engage in lawn bowls and other recreational activities.

The current metal halide lighting system, while meeting required lux levels for the sport, is not energy efficient. With the planned expansion of the green to accommodate eight rinks, the lighting infrastructure must be replaced due to the high cost of relocating existing fixtures.

This project will address these challenges by delivering modern, accessible infrastructure that will enhance participation in lawn bowls and create an inclusive, community-focused venue.

Proposed Scope

The Kaniva Bowling All-Abilities Infrastructure Upgrade will include:

• A new 38m by 38m synthetic bowling green with level access.
• New accessible pathways throughout the facility.
• Installation of LED sports lighting to 200 lux, ensuring compliance with modern standards while improving energy efficiency.
• A new standalone accessible toilet to support inclusive participation.
• Relocation of existing shelters and seating to improve functionality and accessibility.
• Landscaping and fencing enhancements to improve the overall environment.
• Detailed design works to ensure the upgrades meet all relevant standards and community needs.

By delivering these improvements, the project will create a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment for all users. The upgrades will not only benefit current members of the Kaniva Bowling Club but also encourage greater participation in sport and recreation across the community, particularly for people with disabilities and mobility challenges.

This investment in Kaniva’s sporting infrastructure will ensure the longevity of the facility, promote inclusivity, and support the health and well-being of residents for years to come.
