West Wimmera Shire Council has completed a playground and inclusion upgrade at the Goroke Kindergarten, creating a more accessible, inclusive and engaging outdoor play environment for children and families.

The project was supported by funding from the Victorian Government's Building Blocks Program and a contribution from the Goroke Parents Advisory Group (PAG). The upgrade focused on improving accessibility, reducing maintenance requirements and providing opportunities for all children to participate in play.

About this project

The completed works included the removal of the existing soft fall area, fencing and play equipment, followed by site levelling and the installation of a new concrete base. A wet pour rubber soft fall surface was installed across the entire play space, creating a consistent and accessible surface that supports mobility and inclusion.

New play equipment, including a basket swing and trampoline, has been installed to encourage universal play experiences. A new boundary fence with a concrete plinth was also constructed to improve durability and minimise ongoing maintenance requirements.

Project funding

The project was delivered with funding from:

  • Department of Education Building Blocks Program: $197,900
  • Goroke PAG: $2,000

Why this project is important

The upgraded kindergarten playground supports the delivery of the 15-hour mixed-age kindergarten program, playgroup activities and future early years service expansion, including the anticipated introduction of Pre-Prep from 2027.

The design has been guided by the seven principles of universal design to create a space that is accessible, welcoming and usable for all children. By providing inclusive play opportunities and improving accessibility throughout the outdoor environment, the project helps ensure every child can participate, explore and learn alongside their peers.

The upgrade also supports cultural and environmental awareness while creating a safer, more sustainable and future-ready outdoor learning environment for the Goroke community.
