A singular detection of the H5 strain of high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5 bird flu) has been confirmed in south-west Victoria, following on from cases in Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales.
At this stage, there remains no evidence of mass mortality, infection in poultry or in our agricultural production system. There continues to be a low risk to human health.
We understand this may be distressing and we need to take every step we can to help care for our environment and wild birds. Our advice is to “Avoid, Record, Report” sick, injured or dead birds.
Key warning signs include the sudden death of a bird or finding five or more dead birds in the same area. If you find sick or dead wild birds, or wildlife showing signs of H5 bird flu:

Following a report, DEECA will assess the information and determine whether testing is required. It is also recommended that pet owners prevent cats and dogs from consuming sick or deceased birds that may carry disease.
