Goroke Recreation Reserve could soon see much-needed upgrades to its lighting and irrigation, with West Wimmera Shire Council applying for funding to bring the facility up to modern standards.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Council agreed to apply for $608,000 from the State Government’s Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund for the Goroke AFL Lighting and Irrigation Project.

If successful, the project will deliver new AFL-standard lighting, a modern irrigation system, upgraded drainage, and improved fencing, which will enhance safety, sustainability, and accessibility for the local community.

To deliver the $760,000 project, Council has undertaken the scoping and planning, including design works, will lodge the application, and be responsible for the overall delivery of the project.

On top of this Council will make a further contribution of $11,400. The Goroke community will be contributing $140,600 towards the project.

Mayor Tim Meyer said the project was a crucial step in ensuring that sporting facilities in Goroke remained viable and fit for purpose.

“The current facilities at Goroke Recreation Reserve are outdated and present significant challenges,” he said.

“The oval lighting is insufficient for safe night training and events, while irrigation relies on volunteers moving a portable sprinkler across the entire playing surface.

“The proposed upgrades will not only enhance player safety but also reduce maintenance demands and operational costs.”

Cr Meyer said this project was part of Council's commitment to bringing all sporting facilities and recreation reserves in the shire up to modern standards.

Over the past two years, recent upgrades have included the Apsley Netball Tennis Court and Lighting Upgrade ($953,470), Harrow Netball Tennis Court and Lighting Upgrade ($985,261), Kaniva AFL Lighting Upgrade ($333,334), Harrow AFL Lighting Upgrade ($333,334), and the Edenhope Recreation Reserve Changerooms Upgrade ($1.6 million).

“Council is committed to supporting our local clubs and volunteers, and these upgrades will ensure the reserve remains a key community hub for years to come,” he said.
