West Wimmera Shire Council is asking every household across the municipality to complete a health and wellbeing census to help identify how residents stay active

The census will help Council better understand the health and wellbeing needs of the community and identify opportunities to support increased physical activity and social connection.

It asks residents about their participation in sport, recreation and physical activity, as well as their sense of social connection.

Everyone who usually lives in the household is encouraged to take part, including adults and children.

Residents who are not currently physically active are also encouraged to respond, as their feedback is important in identifying barriers and opportunities for participation.

The information will help Council better understand the health and wellbeing needs of the community and identify opportunities to support increased physical activity and social connection.

The results will also inform future planning, project development and funding applications as part of Council's Close to Home project.

Close to Home is a two-year project focused on creating more equitable and sustainable health, wellbeing and recreation opportunities for children and young people across West Wimmera.

Physical activity includes more than organised sport. It includes activities such as walking, swimming, dancing, gardening and gym sessions, as well as active travel to school, work or the shops.

Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said the census was an opportunity for residents to help shape future health and recreation opportunities across West Wimmera.

"Understanding what people are currently doing, what they enjoy and what might prevent them from being more active will help Council make informed decisions about future opportunities,” he said.

"Everyone's circumstances are different, so it is important to hear from people of all ages and activity levels. I encourage every household to take the time to complete the census."

One survey can include up to five household members.

Larger households will need to complete a second survey.

Adults are encouraged to answer for themselves where possible, while parents and carers can provide responses on behalf of children.

All completed surveys will go into the draw to win one of three $100 vouchers to spend at a West Wimmera business.

Residents can complete the census online at surveymonkey.com.au/r/westwimmera.

The census closes on Sunday 22 November.
