Learning grows at Kaniva Kindergarten

Kaniva Kindergarten has introduced two new programs to support children’s mental health and wellbeing and hands-on learning in gardening and cooking.
The service recently implemented the Be You program and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.
The Be You initiative focuses on children’s mental health and wellbeing by supporting their social and emotional development.
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program engages children directly in growing, preparing and sharing food.
The service recently installed water-saving planters to help teach the children about water conservation, environmental care and where food comes from.
The next step will be to start planting fruit and vegetable, so children can experience the full cycle of growing, harvesting and sharing food together.
These hands-on opportunities help children learn to recognise and express emotions, work together, and develop resilience, all while having fun outdoors.
Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said the programs were helping children learn through real, everyday experiences.
“These programs give children the chance to build confidence, independence and teamwork through practical activities,” he said.
“They also support emotional regulation and help children learn how to express their feelings in positive ways.”
Council acknowledges the support of families and the Kaniva Kindergarten Parent Advisory Group for their contribution in helping establish the garden space and strengthening connections between home and the service.
